Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a 2016 fantasy film directed by David Yates and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. A spin-off of the Harry Potter film series, it was produced and written by J. K. Rowling, in her screenwriting debut, and inspired by her book of the same name. The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander with Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Ron Perlman and Colin Farrell in supporting roles. It is the first instalment in the Fantastic Beasts series, and the ninth overall in J. K. Rowling's Wizarding World, which is the franchise that began with the Harry Potter films.[6]

Principal photography began at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, England on 17 August 2015. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them premiered in New York City on 10 November 2016 and was released worldwide on 18 November 2016 in 3D, IMAX 4K Laser and other large format theatres. It has grossed $797 million worldwide, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of 2016.

Plot
In 1926, British wizard and magizoologist Newt Scamander arrives by boat to New York City en route to Arizona. He encounters Mary Lou Barebone, a non-magical woman ("No-Maj" or "Muggle") who heads the New Salem Philanthropic Society, which claims that witches and wizards are real and dangerous. As Newt listens to her speak, a Niffler escapes from his magically expanded suitcase, which houses multiple magical creatures. As he attempts to capture it, he meets No-Maj cannery worker and aspiring baker Jacob Kowalski, and they accidentally swap suitcases. Demoted Auror (a hunter of dark wizards) Tina Goldstein arrests Newt for being an unregistered wizard and takes him to the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) headquarters, hoping to regain her former position. However, as Jacob's suitcase contains only baked goods, Newt is released. At Jacob's tenement apartment, several creatures escape from Newt's suitcase. They destroy his apartment, and one bites him.

After Tina and Newt find Jacob and the suitcase, Tina takes them to her apartment to be monitored and introduces them to Queenie, her Legilimens sister. Queenie and Jacob are mutually attracted, though American wizards are forbidden to marry or even socially interact with No-Majs. Newt takes Jacob inside his magically expanded suitcase, where Jacob encounters a contained Obscurus, a dark, destructive parasite that develops inside magically gifted children if they suppress their magical abilities. Newt extracted it from a young girl who has died, those afflicted rarely living past the age of ten. Newt persuades Jacob to help search for the missing creatures. After re-capturing two of the three escaped beasts, they re-enter the suitcase, which Tina takes to MACUSA. Officials arrest them, believing one of Newt's beasts is responsible for killing Senator Henry Shaw Jr. They decide to destroy Newt's suitcase and obliviate Jacob's recent memories. Director of Magical Security Percival Graves accuses Newt of conspiring with the infamous dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Newt and Tina are sentenced to immediate death, but Queenie and Jacob rescue them; the foursome then find and re-capture the last of the creatures.

Meanwhile, Percival Graves approaches Credence Barebone, Mary Lou's adopted teenage son, and offers to free him from his abusive mother. In exchange, he wants Credence to find an Obscurus. Graves believes it has caused the mysterious destructive incidents around the city. Credence finds a wand under his adopted-sister, Modesty's, bed. Mary Lou assumes it is Credence's wand, but Modesty claims it is hers. When she is about to be punished, the Obscurus is unleashed, killing everyone except Modesty and Credence. Graves arrives and dismisses Credence as being a Squib (a non-magical person of wizard ancestry), and refuses to teach him magic. Credence reveals he is the Obscurus' host, having lived longer than any other host due to the intensity of his magic. In a rage, he unleashes the Obscurus upon the city.

Newt finds Credence hiding in a subway tunnel, but he is attacked by Graves. Tina, who knows Credence, arrives and attempts to calm him, while Graves tries to convince Credence to listen to him. As Credence begins to settle into human form, Picquery and Aurors arrive. Picquery decides Credence must be executed to protect their magical society. The Aurors apparently disintegrate him, but a tiny Obscurus fragment escapes. Graves admits to unleashing the Obscurus to expose the magical community to the No-Majs, and angrily claims that MACUSA protects the No-Majs more than themselves. After being subdued by one of Newt's beasts, he is revealed to actually be Grindelwald in disguise and taken into custody by MACUSA Aurors.

MACUSA fears their secret world has been exposed, but Newt releases his Thunderbird to disperse a poultice as rainfall over the city that erases all New Yorkers' recent memories as MACUSA wizards repair the destruction. Queenie kisses Jacob goodbye as the rain erases his memories. Newt departs for Europe, but promises to return and visit Tina when his book is finished; he also anonymously leaves Jacob a case of silver Occamy eggshells to fund his bakery. Jacob's bakery is a huge success, the fantastic shapes of his breads and pastries unknowingly inspired by Newt's beasts. Queenie visits the bakery, and Jacob notices her and it brings a huge smile to his face.

Production
Development
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is mentioned several times as a school textbook in the Harry Potter book series, although Scamander himself does not appear in any of the books. In 2001 Rowling published an edition of the "textbook" to be sold to raise money for the British charity Comic Relief. The book is a directory of magical creatures written with an introduction by its author Newt Scamander; it does not contain a storyline narrative. (In literature, the creation of such a long work not part of a novel's narrative storyline is known as a false document.[22])

First announced in September 2013, the project marks Rowling's debut as a screenwriter.[23] The film sees the return of producer David Heyman, as well as writer Steve Kloves, both veterans of the Potter film franchise.[24] After Alfonso Cuarón declined involvement,[25][26] Warner Bros. announced that David Yates would direct at least the first instalment of a planned trilogy.[27] James Newton Howard was contracted to compose the score.[28]

Pre-production
Eddie Redmayne was cast in the lead role of Newt Scamander, the Wizarding World's pre-eminent magizoologist, in June 2015.[7] Matt Smith and Nicholas Hoult were also considered.[29][30] Alison Sudol, in her feature film debut, and Katherine Waterston were subsequently chosen to play the witch sisters Queenie and Tina.[8][11] Ezra Miller and Colin Farrell joined the cast as the wizards Credence and Graves,[12][15] while comedian Dan Fogler was cast as Jacob, a non-magical person whom Newt befriends.[14] Following thousands of auditions in an open casting call, ten-year-old Faith Wood-Blagrove was chosen for the part of Modesty.[19] Jenn Murray signed on to star as Chastity,[20] and Samantha Morton was cast as Mary Lou.[16] Jon Voight, Gemma Chan, Carmen Ejogo and Ron Perlman were cast in unnamed roles.[17][18]

Michael Gambon, who played Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter films, expressed his enthusiasm for the series. "I want to be in it, yes," he confirmed and suggested that he would like to appear in the role of Dumbledore's father.[31]

Filming[edit]
Principal photography commenced on 17 August 2015, at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden.[13][16][32][33] Several scenes were also shot on location in London.[34] After two months, the production moved to St George's Hall in Liverpool, which was transformed into 1920s New York City.[35] Framestore in London produced the visual effects for the film.[36]

Deepwater Horizon is a 2016 American biopic disaster film directed by Peter Berg, written by Matthew Sand and Matthew Michael Carnahan, and starring an ensemble cast including Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O'Brien and Kate Hudson. It is based on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Principal photography began on April 27, 2015 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival[7] and was theatrically released in the United States on September 30, 2016. It received generally positive reviews and grossed over $118 million worldwide.

Plot
On April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon, an oil drilling rig operated by private contractor Transocean, is set to begin drilling off the southern coast of Louisiana on behalf of BP. Engineer Michael "Mike" Williams (Mark Wahlberg) and rig supervisor James "Jimmy" Harrell (Kurt Russell) are surprised to learn that the workers assigned to pour the concrete foundation intended to keep the well stable are being sent home early without conducting a pressure test, at the insistence of BP company man Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich). While Mike preps the drilling team, including Caleb Holloway (Dylan O'Brien), Harrell meets with Vidrine and persuades him to conduct a test, which only serves to weaken the already-crumbling foundation further. Without waiting for Harrell to confirm the results, Vidrine orders the well to be opened.

At first, the operation goes smoothly, but the foundation eventually gives way, triggering a massive blowout that overpowers and kills Keith Manuel, Shane Roshto, Roy Kemp, Karl Kleppigner, Adam Weise and Gordon Jones.

A chain of equipment malfunctions, coupled with a failed attempt to seal the well, ignites the oil, killing Dewey Revette, Stephen Curtis, Jason Anderson (Ethan Suplee) and Donald Clark. Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriguez), the rig's navigation officer, tries to alert the Coast Guard, only to be overruled by her superior, Captain Curt Kuchta, on the grounds that the rig is not in any imminent danger. With oil leaking into the ocean, a frightened pelican flies into the bridge of a nearby vessel, which heads towards the rig just as the workers begin a frantic evacuation. Harrell, still alive, although seriously injured in the explosion, is rescued by Mike and assumes control of the situation, only to discover that the rig could not be saved. Dale Burkeen, a close friend of Mike's, sacrifices himself to keep a burning crane from collapsing onto the surviving crew, while Mike and Caleb are able to retrieve Vidrine and get him to safety.

As night falls and the burning oil lights up the area, the Coast Guard becomes aware of the incident and sends a ship to collect the survivors. With all the lifeboats full, Mike locates the emergency life raft, but it becomes separated from the rig before he and Andrea can board, causing the latter to suffer a panic attack. Just as the oil in the well itself ignites and destroys the rig, the two jump into the water and are picked up by rescuers.

Returned home, the workers reunite with their families in a hotel lobby, during which a relative of one of the deceased confronts Mike for failing to save him, resulting in Mike having a panic attack. The film ends with a series of clips showing the aftermath of the disaster, including testimony from the real-life Mike Williams and the revelation that not a single employee of either Transocean or BP was prosecuted for their actions. Pictures appear of the 11 men who lost their lives before the credits.

Production
On March 8, 2011, it was announced that Summit Entertainment, Participant Media, and Image Nation had acquired the film rights to The New York Times' article Deepwater Horizon's Final Hours, written by David Barstow, David S. Rohde, and Stephanie Saul, and published on December 25, 2010, about the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and subsequent oil spill.[9][10] Matthew Sand was set to write the screenplay, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura was in talks to produce the film under his Di Bonaventura Pictures banner.[10] Summit and Participant Media/Imagenation would also finance the film. On acquiring the article to develop into a film, the president of Participant Media, Ricky Strauss said,

This is a perfect fit for us–a suspenseful and inspiring real-life account of everyday people whose values are tested in the face of an impending environmental disaster.[11]

On July 24, 2012, Ric Roman Waugh was in talks with the studios to direct the film, Mark Vahradian was set to produce the film along with Bonaventura, and Lions Gate Entertainment also joined the project to produce and distribute.[12] On July 11, 2014, it was announced that All Is Lost's director J. C. Chandor had been hired to direct the film; the screenplay's first draft was written by Sand, while Matthew Michael Carnahan wrote the second draft.[13] In early October, it was confirmed that Summit would distribute the film, not Lionsgate.[14] On January 30, 2015, it was reported that Lone Survivor director Peter Berg had replaced Chandor, and would re-team with Wahlberg on the film. Chandor exited due to creative differences.[15]

Casting
On August 19, 2014, casting began, with actor Mark Wahlberg added in the lead role of the film.[16] Wahlberg plays Mike Williams, a real-life electronics technician on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. On March 18, 2015, Gina Rodriguez was set to play a woman named Andrea Fleytas, who was on the bridge onboard the Deepwater Horizon at the time of the blowout, and frantically tried to contact the Coast Guard.[17] On April 10, 2015, Deadline reported that Dylan O'Brien was in talks to play Caleb Holloway.[18] Kurt Russell joined the film on the same day O'Brien was in talks.[19] Soon after, John Malkovich was confirmed cast, as a BP representative who fatally underestimates the dangers of working on the rig.[20] Kate Hudson was announced as a cast member in May, 2015, and playing the wife of Wahlberg's character; her role will be her first on-screen pairing with Russell, her stepfather, although they shared no dialogue in the film.[8][21]

Filming
Principal photography on the film began on April 27, 2015.[22] It was officially announced by Lionsgate on May 18, 2015 that filming had begun in New Orleans, Louisiana. Scenes at the BP offices were filmed in Liverpool, England, in September 2015, as it is often used to double for New York.[8]
